Red Ferne Abyssinians

About Red Ferne

Hello and Welcome to Red Ferne Abyssinians

We are Walter and Lisa Kaelin and have been active in CFA for 8 years now. We are a small cattery and have about 2-3 litters a year. I am a vet-tech and have been working for a local vet for 15 years now in the city of Louisville. My husband works for Ford Motor Co. We have 3 grown sons Walter Jr., aka Beau is 29, Daniel is 27 and John is 24, John is still at home he just starting working towards his Masters in English he already has his Undergrad in English and Anthropology. We breed all four colors of Abyssinians the ruddy, red, blue and fawn. We are members of the Abyssinian breed council and the ACCA. We live in a log cabin on 5 acres in Shepherdsville, Ky which is about 40 minutes south of the city of Louisville.  Health is my number one priority and I pk test all my breeding abys as well as blood type them. I have recently started testing them for PRA as well. Tritrichomomas foetus a protozoan parasite of the colon is becoming quite common in abys so I screen all incoming cats for this now as well. My passion for cats began as a child at the age of 7 when I sat a basket under the tree for Santa to bring me a kitten needless to say I did not receive my kitten that year my family was a dog family. I did not get my first cat until the age of 12 a lovely DSH named Elsa who died of Felv 2 years later. I am thankful for the testing we have today so that we do not see that disease as much as we used to.  My aunt used to take me to cat shows and I had always dreamed of showing and breeding purebred cats but what breed of cats to choose.  Well after watching the "The Cat from Out Space" I fell in love with Jake the star of the movie who is a ruddy Abyssinian so this is how I choose the Abyssinian breed.

My cattery name Red Ferne is from the movie "Where the Red Fern Grows" a movie I love very much, I am of Cherokee heritage, my Great-great grandmother was Cherokee and this is also part of the reason since the legend of the red fern is a Cherokee legend. My goal is to improve the Abyssinian for the show ring and to breed very healthy Abyssinian. My pet buyers become part of a extended family and I welcome pictures to see how the aby grows into the new family. Please always feel free to call with questions if you have one about your new Abyssinian. I love to see new pictures of my abys in their new homes. Our kitten prices can vary as do our retired adults  and usually are based on age and sx pricing. Retired adults will vary with their sx cost I charge very little for adults for I just want them in loving forever homes its harder to place adults and I have had to learn I cannot keep everyone for I find letting my adults go harder then my kittens.

This is Judah Ben Hur my best friend in the entire world he was the first kitten born to my Abyssinian breeding program and we thought we were going to lose him he was a miracle kitten. He is a blue Abyssinian neuter. He was the only kitten in the litter. We alter all of our kittens before they leave our home. They do not leave here until the age of 4 months, females sometimes are closer to 5 months depending on their weight for their spay. They will have had all their vaccines also.  All kittens/cats are sold with a written contract, a non-refundable deposit of 150.00 is required to hold a kitten at Red Ferne. We are a Felv/Fiv free cattery. Before inquiring about a Abyssinian do your research on the breed they are very curious and very active breed and do not like to be alone so they are not a breed for everyone. They get on your tables, counters and into your Life. They attach themselves to you almost like a dog in many ways. They bond so closely to their person. Once you have owned a aby you will never go back. We advise that you keep your Abyssinian indoors at all times for their safety. I also advise you to not declaw your kitten its very hard on the cat I think if more of you saw it done you would think twice before putting your cat through it. If you have multiple scratching posts notice I said multiple then your cat will use them your kitten will come from me trained to use a post but its up to you to continue I have posts all over my house. I hate declawing and consider the act barbaric. Many people wonder why we will not let a kitten leave here at a early age. Well the answer to this is first off to evaluate for the show ring we cannot tell for sure until they are a minimum of 3 months of age, second I feel like kittens need to stay with their mother until the age of 12 weeks  and since we alter before leaving that of course makes the wait a bit longer but I have never had a pet owner yet tell me they could not bond because of this I think you can bond with a cat at any age of their life. We try very hard to keep our mother and kittens happy with one another. If we do not have any kittens now we would be happy to add your name to our waiting list. Just fill our my inquiry form and I will get back to you asap. Thanks so much for reading about Red Ferne. We DO not ship

I LOVE this photo is from a couple that have bought 3 abys from us and I am sharing this photo on my main page to represent abys on the counters which is where they love to socialize with their owners. To own a aby you have to adjust to abys into everything and on everything.

From Left to right is Buddy who is Voodoo's brother, Luanne and the new addition Sonic. Thanks for the great pics Kristin and Jordan, St Louis, MO.
